 Footprints in the Sand

One night I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the lord.

Many scenes from my life flashed across the sky.

In each scene I noticed footprints in the sand.

Sometimes there were two sets of footprints,

other times there were one set of footprints.

This bothered me, because I noticed

that during the low periods of my life,

when I was suffering from

anguish, sorrow or defeat,

I could see only one set of footprints.

So I said to the Lord,

"You promised me Lord,

that if I followed you,

you would walk with me always.

But I have noticed that during

the most trying periods of my life

there have only been one

set of footprints in the sand.

Why, when I needed you most,

you have not been there for me?"

The Lord replied,

"The times when you have

seen only one set of footprints,

is when I carried you."

砂の上の足跡

ある夜、私は夢を見た。私は、主と共に、なぎさを歩いていた。

暗い夜空に、それまでの私の人生が映し出された。

どの光景にも、砂の上に二人の足跡が残されていた。

一つは私の足跡、もう一つは主の足跡であった。  

これまでの人生の最後の光景が映し出されたとき、私は、砂の上の足跡に

目を留めた。そこには一つの足跡しかなかった。私の人生で一番辛く悲しい時だった。

この事がいつも私の心を乱していたので、私はその悩みについて主にお尋ねした。

「主よ。私があなたに従うと決心したとき、あなたは、すべての道において、

私とともに歩み、私と語り合ってくださると約束されました。それなのに、

私の人生の一番辛い時、一人の足跡しかなかったのです。一番あなたを必要と

したときに、あなたが、なぜ、私を捨てられたのか、私にはわかりません。」

主は、ささやかれた

「わたしの大切な子よ。わたしは、あなたを愛している。あなたを決して

捨てたりはしない。ましてや、苦しみや試みの時に、足跡が一つだったとき、私はあなたを背負って歩いていた。」
